這一對詞組在形式上頗近似，但詞義和用法卻不相同。
behind time的意思是“遲到”、“誤點”、“逾期”，它總是相對一定的時刻而言，與in time（及時地）相對應。
behind the times表示“落伍”、“不合時宜”、“趕不上時代”的意思，它與ahead of the times（先進的、跑在時代前麵的）相對應。
behind time可以用作定語、表語或狀語；behind the times隻能用作表語。例：
The plane is ten minutes behind time.
飛機誤點了十分鍾。
She is always behind time with her payments.
她總是不能按期付款。
He ldom es behind time.
他難得遲到。
I found his ideas on marriage are very much behind the times.
我發現他對婚姻的想法是非常落伍的。

如上所述，behind time是相對一定的時刻而言，如對某一件事來說，就應該用late for，而不用behind time。例如：
They arrived five mioo late for the entrance examination.
他們遲到了五分鍾，不能參加入學考試了。
behind schedule也表示“晚了”之意，但它專指“落在計劃之後”。如：
Becau of the strike,the work is veral weeks behind schedule.
由於這次罷工，該工作比原定計劃慢了幾個星期。
