這兩個詞都是形容詞，又都有“連續的”意思，但並非完全一樣。
tinual的意思是“屢次的”、“時常的”（very frequent），有斷斷續續、頻繁而有間隔的意思；tinuous的意思則是“不間斷的”（uninterrupted in time or quence）, 有不中斷、不停止和規律不變的意思。因此，語氣較強而使用範圍也較廣。
另一點區別是，tinual隻用於指時間，tinuous既可指時間也可指空間而言。
The tinual ringing of the telephone annoyed me.
持續的電話鈴聲使我感到厭煩。
tinual dripping of water wears away a stone.
滴水穿石。
In Malaysia the tinuous rain has prevented us from going out.
在馬來西亞時，連續不斷的雨使我們無法外出。
下麵將tinual和tinuous用在一個句子中，以便區分：
His tinual interruptions impede my tinuous work.
他不時地打擾我，使我不能專注工作。
請注意tinuous在下列短語中的不同譯法：
a tinuous stretch of wheat fields一片連綿不斷的麥田
a tinuous stream of people川流不息的人群
a tinuous line of cars絡繹不絕的車輛
在上列三個短語中，tinuous指的不是時間，而是空間。
語法術語“現在進行時”是the prent tinuous ten；“直流電”是tinuous current（或direct current），因為在這兩種場合都含有“連續不斷”的意思。
