這一對是同義短語，在含義上，毫無區別，都是表示“日夜不停地”的意思，相當於漢語的“日以繼夜”或“夜以繼日”。在句中，它們作時間狀語，修飾謂語動詞，可以互換使用。例：
After the hurrie died away,they worked night and day to repair the typhooer.
颶風逐漸停息後，他們夜以繼日地工作以修複避風塘。
The factories are w tinuously day and night throughout the year.
這些工廠一年到頭都是夜以繼日地在連續不斷地開工。
一般說來，night and day和day and night可以互換使用，但前者比後者用得普遍。在英漢兩種語言裏，像day and night和night and day隨意顛倒使用的情況並不多見，一般都有固定的說法。
有趣的是，英語裏有些說法和我們漢語完全相同，而有些則恰好相反，這是值得我們注意的。現各舉數例，以見一斑：
