這兩個詞都是表示“不相同的”含義，但詞義並不完全一樣。
（一)different是個形容詞，其義為：“與……不同”、“與……不一樣”（not of the same kind）；differing來自動詞differ，是個派生形容詞，其意為：“與……不一致”、“與……有分歧”（disagreeing with）。從下麵的例句可以看出，different說明兩樣事物的不相同；differing則著重指出兩樣事物之間的分歧或不一致。
Your teag approach is different from mine.
你的教學方法和我的不同。
She''s a different woman from what she was over five years ago.
她和五年前的她已不一樣了。
Some people won''t tolerate differing views and are annoyed by them.They like flattery and dislike criticism.
有些人是不能對他們提不同的意見，提了就不高興。他們隻愛聽恭維話，不愛聽批評話。
（二)different可以表示“各種不同的”、“各種各樣的”（various or veral that are not the same）之意; differing則無此義。例：
Men''s tastes are different.
人們的愛好各種各樣。
In Macau she has ats with three different banks.
她在澳門三家不同的銀行裏開立了賬戶。
不少語法書說，與形容詞different搭配的介詞是from，不能用than或to。事實上，在美國，different than比different from普遍得多。例如, 他們說：The mountains of Japan appear different than the mountains of California．在日常談話中，特別在英國，有些人甚至用different to代替different from和different than。有時候，different還可以和動詞搭配使用，起狀語的功能。例：
I ud to hold that opinion,but now I think different！
