這一對短語都表示“相互”之意，許多舊的語法書都說：each other用於兩者之間；one another則用於三者或三者以上。它們還舉例為證：
The two students help each other.
這兩位學生相互幫助。
The three teis help one another.
這三個技術員相互幫助。
其實，在現代英語中，each other和one another的差異已日漸縮小，現在它們已能相互替換使用了。下麵兩個例句摘自Evans的A Diary of porary Ameri Usage。
The two men shook hands with one another.
The people in the room all knew each other.
值得我們注意的是，each other和one another都不能用作主語, 例如我們不能說：We know what each other thinks.或We know how one another is getting along.我們隻能說：We eaow what the other thinks.或We eaow how the other is getting along.
此外，我們還要記住，在某些場合裏，each other和one another是不能換用的。例如：
The cars followed one another in quick succession on the highway.
在高速公路上，汽車一輛接一輛地在疾馳。
這裏的one another不能改為each follows the other。
另一區別是，one another當中可以加介詞，each other當中一般不加。見下例：
The cars are ing out of the car park,oer another.
