這一組詞的含義並不相同。
“ex-”是一個活用的拉丁前綴，表示“前任”（former）的意思, 因此，ex-saster是“前任校長”，它也可以改作former saster或past saster。它一般多指在世之人。
“late saster”的意思是“已故的校長”。例：
“Do you know his ex-wife?”—“Yes, the well-known actress Elizabeth Taylor.”
“你認識他的前妻嗎?”——“認識。著名演員伊麗莎白·泰勒。”

在英語裏，與之類似的詞很多，例如：

請注意，late是指剛死不久的人，不可以指死了很久的人。例如我們可以說the late Gee Bernard Shaw（蕭伯納），但不能說the late Chaucer（喬叟）。另一點值得在此指出的是，“ex-”除了用以指人外，也可用於非人稱的名詞。例：ex-schoolroom（前教室）；“ex-”一般不用於複合詞之前，例如我們說ex-president, 但不說ex-Vice-President, 應把ex-改為former或past。
