這一對詞的含義非常相像，但使用場合有所不同。
farther是further的變體，在一般應用時，它們常可替換使用；但必須注意，在某些情況，它們各有所專，不能換用。
farther是far的比較級, 表示“更遠的”（at a greater distance）的含義，大都指具體的事物；further也是far 的比較級，但它表示“更進一層的”（more advanced）或“外加的”（additional）的含義，一般用以指抽象的東西。例：
I live in Shatin; he lives in Fanling． He lives farther (不用further)away than I do．
我住在沙田，他住在粉領。他住得比我遠。
If you walk farther (不用further）,you will e the monastery.
要是你再向前走，就可以看見那修道院。
Will you discuss the problem further（不用farther）？
你們將進一步討論這個問題嗎？
I have nothing further (不用farther)to say．

請注意，下麵句中的farther和further都是用作副詞，但含義並不相同。前者用以指空間的距離，後者指程度：
He went farther than I． (指路走得比我遠）
He went further than I． (指事情更進一步）
在現代英語中，某些英美作家對這兩個詞的區別並不是很嚴格，有時他們將這兩個詞互換使用，例如有人寫道：
I could walk no further. (代替farther）
Do you wish to pursue the matter farther？ (代替further）
美國著名語法學家Curme在他的Syntax一書中舉了這麼兩個例句，以說明farther和further在某些場合下可互換使用：
I shall be ba three days at the farthest (or at the furthest）．
You may go farther（or further)and fare wor．
