這兩個詞都有“聽見”的意思，但詞義和使用場合有區別。hear含有“直接聽見”的意思；hear of則含有“間接聽見”的意思，常指通過書報或其它方式而知道的意思。
在英語裏，某些動詞既可直接以名詞或代詞作賓語，也可加上特定的介詞然後再用名詞或代詞作賓語。一般來說，沒有介詞的時候，動詞和賓語的關係比較密切和直接，加上介詞後，關係比較間接。例：
I''d like to hear your opinions about the building of the neort.
我想聽聽你關於建新機場的意見。
I heard them talking in the room．
我聽見他們在隔壁房間談話。
We have heard of the arrival of some graduates at the workshop．
我們聽說工場裏來了幾個畢業生。
We have not yet heard of his wife''s death．
我們還未聽到他妻子去世的消息。
請注意，hear of和hear from的含義並不相同。hear of是“間接聽見或知道”（見上麵最後兩例）；hear from是“收到……的信件br消息”。例：
I have not heard from him for veral months．
我已有好幾個月沒有收到他的信了。
通過hear和hear of的對比, 我們可以知道know和know of的關係和區別了。例：
I know Mr.Liang．
我認識梁先生。（表示直接認識或相熟）
I know of Mr．Liang.
我聽說過梁先生這個人。（表示隻聞其人，不熟其人）
在英語中, 除了hear和know之外, 還有ask，learn，sing，tell，write等動詞也具有類似的結構和區別。試對比下列句中tell和tell of的區別：
