這兩個詞都有“高”的意思，但詞義和使用場合不同。
high除了作形容詞外（見high與tall一節），尚可用作副詞，因此容易和另一副詞highly混淆不清。
一般說來，high大都照字麵直解，用於具體的事物或目標, 如：to hold one''s head high（抬高頭）; arch high and low（上下尋找）; to aim high（針對高標準）; the a is running high（海浪滔天）; 但high也可用於比喻意思，例：to fix one''s hopes high（寄予厚望）; to live high（過奢侈的生活）。例：
Retly prices have rin too high.
最近物價漲得太高了。
They climbed high up the mountain．
他們爬上了高山。
His heart beat high.
他的心跳得很厲害。
He aims high in his political ambitions．
他的政治抱負很大。
Popular s ran high.
群情激昂。
highly隻能用作比喻意思，相當於漢語的“非常地”、“高度地”，它可以修飾分詞、形容詞和動詞。如：a highly amusing film（十分有趣的電影）; a highly cultivated man（很有教養的人）; to speak highly of someone（高度讚揚某人）。例：
Many highly qualified experts were nt to work in Africa.
許多高水平的專家被派遣到非洲工作。
It is highly fidential.
此事非常機密。
請注意，在下列複合形容詞中，用high，不用highly。例如：a high-born person; high-sounding words; a high-pitched voice; high-priced goods; high-heeled shoes; high-backed chairs.
