這兩個詞都有“高大”之意，但含義和使用場合有所不同。
high的使用範圍較廣，通常用於抽象名詞或體積巨大、沒有生命的東西，如時間、速度、價格、山、房屋等；tall大都用於具體的事物或外形細長而具有生長力的東西，如：煙囪、人、樹、竹竿等。
high的反義詞是low；tall的反義詞是short。例：
It''s high time to work hard.
現在該是努力工作的時候了。
To most people in mainland a,everything is high in pri Hong Kong.
對大多數大陸居民來說，香港百物都很昂貴。
Mt．Everest is the highest peak in the world.
珠穆朗瑪峰是世界最高峰。
The Bank of a Building is one of the highest (or tallest)buildings in Hong Kong.
中國銀行大廈是香港最高的建築物之一。
Many tall eys have appeared in the own．
新市鎮內出現了許多高大的煙囪。
Mary is the tallest in her class.
瑪麗是她班上最高大的學生。
值得注意的是，在修飾某些名詞時，high和tall可互換使用，如a high（或tall）building,tower; 指人的高度時，亦能互換使用，如：I''m ve high（or tall）。但在描述人時則隻可用tall；如：He is very tall。如底部麵積很大，就隻能用high，不可用 tall, 如：a high mountain，a high hill，a high wall。
另一點需要注意的是，tall隻適用於與地麵接觸的物體，不與地麵接觸的就用high。例如：
Look at that high ceiling．
你瞧那高高的天花板。
與表示抽象意義的名詞搭配使用時，隻能用high，不能用tall。例：a high fever（高燒）; a high tone（高調）; a high price（高價）；a high rank（高的地位）；a high esteem（崇高的敬意）等等。
有時候，為了加重語勢，我們可以把high和tall連用在一起。如：
Yes,I remember tho pirees,high and tall.
