這兩個詞都是形容詞，又都含有“想象的”意思，但詞義和使用場合有所不同。
imaginary表示“空想的”、“假想的”、“虛構的”（existing only in the imagination；not real，but produced from pictures in someone''s mind）的含義。如：an imaginary friend（想象中的朋友）; the imaginary enemy（假想的敵人）; an imaginary figure（虛構的人物）; imaginary dangers（想象中的危險）。imaginary既可作定語形容詞，也可以作表語形容詞。例：
The soldiers are at drill on the border，attag the imaginary enemies．
士兵們正在邊界操練，向假想的敵人進攻。
This story is not real; it is only imaginary.
這個故事並非真實，隻是虛構的而已。
Ghosts are all imaginary.
鬼魂都是想象出來的東西。
imaginative是“具有或富有想象力的”（having or showing imagination）。如an imaginative child（很有想象力的孩子）；imaginative writers (富有想象力的作家）; 有時候，imaginative也可以表示“通過想象力創造出來的”（formed by the u of imagination）。如：imaginative writing（通過想象力創造的作品）。例：
My daughter is an imaginative and artistic child．
我的女兒是個富有想象力和藝術感的孩子。
Few poets in a rival Qu Yuan in his siy,imaginative power and evocative u of words.
在中國，很少有詩人能比得上屈原的真誠、富於想象力和動人的辭藻運用。
再將imaginary和imaginative用於一個句子中，以便區別：
Don Quixote was so imaginative as to fight many imaginary battles.
唐·吉訶德非常富有想象力，他作了多次假想的戰鬥。
