這一對短語都表示“在早晨”的含義，但詞義和用法不盡相同。
on the m用以確指某一天或某一個節日的“早晨”；in the m則指當日或日常一般的“早晨”。試對比下列例句中它們的不同使用場合：
On the m of November 4,1995,news of the assassination of the Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin came through the radio．
1995年11月4日早上，電台傳來以色列總理拉賓被殺的消息。
They came to e us on the m of the New Year''s Day.

通過on the m和in the m的比較，我們可以聯想到oernoon（evening）和iernoon（evening）的關係和區別了。
應當在此指出，有時候，我們會在英美出版的書刊上發現違背這種規範用法的現象。例如下麵一句是引自英國小說Jane Eyre：
I reached the lodge at Gateshead about five o''clo the afternoon of the first of May.
作者在此用in而沒有用on，按英語語言純正論者（purists or prescriptivists）認為，這不是“標準英語”。然而，這種用法確實是存在的，特別是當of前麵所修飾的名詞之前用early或late的修飾詞時更是如此。下麵略舉數例，以見一斑：

碰到這種寫法，我們不必問“為什麼？”，把它們記住就是了。
