till和until都是表示“直到……之時”的意義，在句中都可用作連詞和介詞，但使用場合有所不同，它們的區別大致如下：
（一)一般說來，till比until用得普遍，until是較為正式的用語，隻用於正式的文體和場合。
（二)在till和until可以相互換用的場合下，until可以放在句中，亦可放在句首，而till隻能放在句中。如：
The Uates did er the war until December 1941．
Until she was twenty, my mother had never been away from her native town．
They daill dawn．
We shall not start till he es．
（三)指某一點時間時，大都用till；指某一段持續的時間時，大都用until。如：
Last night we didn''t get home till eleven o''clock．
planting in the suburbs of Soochow was not pleted until mid-June．
（四)在某些詞組裏，隻能用till, 不能用until。如：
Good-bye till then．
I''ve lived in Hong Kong all my life up till now．
（五)在表示“結果”（而不是“時間”）的含義時，一般多用until，不用till。例如：
They frittered their money away until they had only a few dollars left．
He ran until he was breathless．
（六)在口語中，美國人喜歡用until，英國人則喜歡用till；在某些till和until可以換用的場合裏，主要是取決於上下文的韻律（如在詩歌中）去選用前者或後者。
值得注意的是，當till和until用在否定句時，其主要動詞一般是終止性的，以表示該動詞的動作直到tillbruntil所表示的時間才發生。翻譯時，要先譯tillbruntil的時間，並在動詞前加個“才”字，即：“直到……時才”。例：
I ot finish writing this book until the end of 1995．
我要到一九九五年年底才能將此書完稿。
