牧歌

狄奧封塔斯司，喚醒藝術的，隻是窮；窮是勞工的教師。窮還不算，靠勞力過日子的人滿心隻是糾著煩惱，連睡夢也不得個安逸，就使晚上闔上了眼，要不，一會兒煩惱又把他圍了起來，又將他從夢中纏醒。
從前有兩個漁人，一對老頭，整天在他們平底的舊大船上度日，吃喝在一起，睡也在一起。他們小小的艙棚是用樹枝架成的，裏麵安著些曬幹的溫草算是他們的床，他們每晚就貼著草壁睡。
周圍滿散著他們勞力的工具，柳枝編的漁籃，蘆梗截成的釣杆，各式的漁鉤，滿漬海鹽的布帆，各類的線索，蘆絨織的盛海蝦的筐子，一堆的大漁網，兩支槳，種種的零星。他們的頭下，就是一點子草席，所有的衣服，和他們航海戴的軟帽。這一船就是他們的勞力，就是他們的財產。進艙也不安個門，也沒有看家的狗；他們看得都是“付餘”，因為窮餓是他們的衛兵。他們也沒有鄰居，隻是永遠靠著他們狹小的艙棚，在海上隱隱地漂流。

Two a fishers once lay side by side On piled-up a-wra their wattled hut, Its leafy wall their curtaihem lay The ons of their trade, basket and rod, Hooks, weed-encumbered s, and cords and oars, And, propped on rollers, an infirm old boat.
Their pillow was a sty mat, eked out With caps and garments: such the ways and means, Such the whole treasury of the fishermen.
They knew no luxuries: owned nor door n; Their craft their all, their mistress Poverty: Their only neighbour O, who for aye Bound their lorn hut came floating lazily.
