I grieve and dare not show my discontent,

I love and yet am forced to seem to hate,

I do,yet dare not say I ever meant,

I seem stark mute but inwardly do prate.

I am and not,I freeze and yet am burned,

Since from myself another self I turned.

My care is like my shadow in the sun,

Follows me flying ,flies when pursue it,

Stands and lies by me,doth what I have done.

His too familiar care doth make me rue it.

No means I find to rid him from my breast,

Till by the end of things it be suppressed.

Some gentler passion slide into my mind,

For I am soft and made of melting snow;

Or be more cruel,love,and so be kind.

Let me or float or sink, be high or low.

Or let me live with some more sweet content,

Or die and so forget what love are meant.

【英國】艾德蒙德·斯賓塞Edmund Spenser(約1552-1599)

我的情人像冰,而我卻像火;

能熔化萬物的火卻讓冰更堅硬;

My love is like to ice,and I to fire;

How comes it then that this her cold so great

Is not dissolved through my so hot desire,

But harder grows the more I her entreat!

Or how comes it that my exceeding heat

Is not delayed by her heart-frozen cold;

But that I burn much more in boiling sweat,

And feel my flames augmented manifold!

What more miraculous thing may be told,

That fire,which all things melts,should harden ice;

And ice,which is congealed with senseless cold,

Should kindle fire by wonderful device!

Such is the power of love in gentle mind,

That it can alter all the course of kind.

Edmund Spenser(1552-1599)

可海浪一來就把她的芳名給衝掉;

想把終將消亡的東西變成不朽;

卻歸塵土,而你將會名聲永駐;

One day I wrote her name upon the strand,

But came the waves and washed it away:

Agayne I wrote it with a second hand,

But came the tyde,and made my paynes his pray.

"Vayne man,"sayd she,"that doest in vaine assay,

A mortall thing so to immortalize,

For I my selve shall lyke to this decay,

And eek my name bee wyped out lykewize."

"Not so, "quod I, "let baser things devize,

To dy in dust,but you shall live by fame;

My verse your vertues rare shall eternize,

And in the heavens wryte your glorious name.

Where whenas death shall all the world subdew,

Our love shall live ,and later life renew."

Edmund Spenser(1552-1599)

她那迎風飛舞閃光的金發;

像帆船滿載著珍奇珠寶;

Fair is my love,when her hair golden hairs

With the loose wind ye waving chance to mark;

Fair when the rose in red cheeks appears,

Or in her eyes the fire of love does spark.

Fair when her breast like a rich laden bark,

With precious merchandise she forth doth lay,

Fair when that cloud of pride ,which oft doth dark

Her goodly light with smiles she dries away.

But fairest she,when so she doth display

The gate with pearls and rubies richly dight

Through which her words so wise do make their way

To bear the message of her gentle spright.

The rest be works of nature's wonderment,

But this the work of heart's astonishment.
