How delicious is the winning
Of a kiss at love's beginning,
When two mutual hearts are sighing
For the knot there's no untying!
Yet remember, midst your wooing,
Love has bliss, but Love has ruing;
Other smiles may make you fickle,
Tears for other charms may trickle.
Love he comes ,and Love he tarries,
Just as fate or fancy carries;
Longest stays,when sorest chidden;
Laughs and flies ,when pressed and bidden.
Bind the sea to slumber stilly,
Bind its odour to the lily,
Bind the aspen never to quiver,
Then bind Love to last for ever.
Love' s a fire that needs renewal
Of fresh beauty for its fuel:
Love' s wing moults when caged and captured,
Only free, he soars enraptured.
Can you keep the bee from ranging
Or the ringdove' s neck from changing?
No! nor fettered Love from dying
In the knot there's no untying.
Thomas Moore(1779-1852)
Give me,my love,that billing kiss
I taught you one delicious night,
When,turning epicures in bliss,
We tried inventions of delight.
Come,gently steal my lips along,
And let your lips in murmurs move,—
Ah,no! —again that kiss was wrong—
How can you be so dull, my love?
"Cease,cease!" the blushing girl replied—
And in her milky arms she caught me—
''How can you thus your pupil chide?
You know it was in the dark you taught me !"
If All Those Endearing Young Charms
Thomas Moore(1779-1852)
即使你美麗的青春隨時光消逝;
一旦真誠愛你就始終如一;
Believe me ,if all those endearing young charms,
Which I gaze on so fondly today,
Were to change by tomorrow,and fleet in my arms,
Like fairy gifts,fading away.
Thou wouldst still be adored as this moment thou art,
Let thy loveliness fade as it will;
And around the dear ruin,each wish of my heart
Would entwine itself verdantly still!
It is not while beauty and youth are thine own,
And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear,
That the fervor and faith of a soul can be known,
To which time will but make thee more dear!
No ,the heart that has truly loved never forgets,
But as truly loves on to the close;
As the sunflower turns on her god,when he sets,
The same look which she turned when he rose!
It Was a New Feeling
Thomas Moore(1779-1852)
此刻已不再掩飾;
可是她沒有把我怪罪;
她輕囑:別閃失;
It was a new feeling——something more
Than we had dared to own before,
Which then we hid not;
We saw it in each other's eye,
And wished,in every half-breathed sigh,
To speak ,but did not.
She felt my lips' impassioned touch——
It was the first time I dared so much,
And yet she chid not;
But whispered over by burning brow,
"Oh,do you doubt I love you now?"
Sweet soul! I did not.
Warmly I felt her bosom thrill,
I pressed it closer,closer still,
Though gently bid not;
