（唐）韓 愈
世有伯樂，然後有千裏馬①。千裏馬常有，而伯樂不常有。故雖有名馬，祗辱於奴隸人之手，駢死於槽櫪之間，不以千裏稱也②。馬之千裏者，一食或盡粟一石③，食馬者不知其能千裏而食也④。是馬也，雖有千裏之能，食不飽，力不足，才美不外見⑤，且欲與常馬等不可得，安求其能千裏也！策之不以其道⑥，食之不能盡其材⑦，鳴之不能通其意⑧，執策而臨之曰：“天下無馬⑨！”嗚呼！其真無馬邪？其真不知馬也！
【題解】
在封建社會裏，往往是昏庸無能者身居高位，真正有學識有才能的人反被埋沒。這篇文章抨擊了這種不合理的現象。在寫法上，通篇是比喻，生動形象；而且波瀾起伏，層層深入，氣勢逼人；結尾處尤為巧妙，以諷刺的口吻，反問的句式，猛力一擊，打中要害而發人深省。
【字解】
① 伯樂：春秋時善於相馬的人。千裏馬：日行千裏的好馬，比喻出色的人才。
② 祗：隻。辱：埋沒。奴隸人：這裏指養馬的奴仆。駢（pián）：馬並列叫駢，駢死是說成雙成對地死，言其死得輕易。櫪（lì）：馬槽。稱：著稱，著名。
③ 一食：吃一頓。或：有時。盡粟一石：要吃盡一石粟。石：十鬥，今讀作dàn。
④ 食馬者：喂馬的人。食：同“飼”。不知其能千裏而食：不知是千裏馬，而是像普通馬那樣喂養。
⑤ 見：現。
⑥ 策：駕馭。不以其道：不能把它當作千裏馬。
⑦ 食之：喂養它。不能盡其材：指喂養不當，不能使馬充分發揮才能。
⑧ 鳴之：馬的嘶叫。不能通其意：指喂馬人不能理解馬嘶叫的含義。
⑨ 執策：拿著馬鞭。天下無馬：這裏的馬是指千裏馬。
人物介紹
About the Author
韓愈（768-824），字退之，河陽（今河南孟縣西）人。唐貞元八年（792）進士，官至吏部侍郎。他是繼漢代司馬遷之後傑出的散文家，曾以鮮明的旗幟和勇敢的精神發動古文運動，對古代散文的發展做出了很大的貢獻。傳有《昌黎先生集》（四十卷）和《外集》（十卷）。

（唐）柳宗元
蝂者，善負小蟲也①。行遇物，輒持取，卬其首負之②。背愈重，雖困劇不止也③。其背甚澀，物積因不散，卒躓仆不能起④。人或憐之，為去其負。苟能行，又持取如故。又好上高，極其力不已⑤。至墜地死。
今世之嗜取者，遇貨不避，以厚其室。不知為己累也，惟恐其不積⑥。及其怠而躓也，黜棄之，遷徙之，亦已病矣⑦。苟能起，又不艾，日思高其位，大其祿，而貪取滋甚，以近於危墜，觀前之死亡不知戒⑧。雖其形魁然大者也，其名，人也，而智則小蟲也。亦足哀夫⑨！
【題解】
這是一篇短小精悍的諷刺文章。先寫出小蟲蝂愛負物，極力登高，不到墜地而死就不肯罷休。然後引出當今的達官貴人，他們唯利是圖，貪得無厭，不到身敗名裂也是不肯回頭。人蟲相比，本性一樣，兩相對照，何其相似！用這種手法諷刺，辛辣有力。
【注釋】
① 蝂（fù bǎn）：一種黑色小蟲。善負：很能背東西。
② 輒（zhé）：總是。卬：同“昂”，抬高。首：頭。
③ 困劇：非常疲憊。止：罷休。
④ 其背甚澀：背上的東西十分牢固。物積因不散：東西堆在背上而不會掉下來。卒：終於。躓（zhì）仆：被絆倒，指被壓倒。
⑤ 苟：如果。極其力：用盡了力氣。不已：不停止。
⑥ 嗜：愛好。遇貨而不避：見到財物不躲避，意思是見錢就撈。厚其室：充實自己的家業。累：累贅。積：積攢。
⑦ 怠而躓：因倦怠而跌倒，意思是在貪取財物的罪惡活動中出了漏子，犯了事。黜棄：被貶斥、被罷官。遷徙（xǐ）：被降職、被流放。亦以病矣：也算是吃盡了苦頭。病：指痛苦。
⑧ 苟：如果。艾：止。祿：薪俸。滋甚：更加厲害。
⑨ 形：形體。魁然：身材魁梧的樣子。智：智識。足：太，十分。哀：可悲。
人物介紹
About the Author
柳宗元（773-819），字子厚。河東解縣（今山西運城西南）人。唐貞元進士，因參加主張革新的王叔文集團，被貶為永州司馬，再貶為柳州刺史。故又稱“柳柳州”。他與韓愈共同倡導古文運動，世稱“韓柳”，其散文峭拔矯健、論說嚴謹，詩作清峭澄澈、抒意暢達。傳有《柳河東集》。
