《曹溪大師別傳》一卷，中國已無傳本。此本是日本所傳，收在《續藏經》二編乙，19套，第五冊，483-488頁。有日本僧祖芳的書後雲：
昔於東武獲《曹溪大師別傳》，曩古傳授大師從李唐手寫齎舊，鎮藏叡嶽。……傳末有“貞元十九，二月十九日畢，天台最澄封”之字，且搭朱印三個，刻“比睿寺印”四字。貞元十九，當日本延曆二十年乙酉也。大師（慧能）遷寂乃唐先天二年，至於貞元十九年，得九十一年。謂《壇經》古本湮滅已久；世流布本，宋後編修；諸傳亦非當時撰。唯此傳去大師謝世不遠，可謂實錄也，而與諸傳及《壇經》異也。……惜乎失編者之名。考《請來進宮錄》曰“《曹溪大師傳》一卷”是也。
寶曆十二年壬午。（乾隆二十七年，西曆1762年）
祖芳此序頗有小錯誤。貞元十九（803年）當日本延曆二十二年癸未，乙酉乃延曆二十四年。先天二年（713）至貞元十九年，得九十年。此皆計算上的小誤。最可怪者，據《傳教大師全集》別卷所收的《叡山大師傳》，最澄入唐，在貞元二十年（804）；其年九月上旬始往天台。如何能有“貞元十九，二月十九日畢，天台最澄封”的題記？
祖芳又引最澄《請來進官錄》有《曹溪大師傳》一卷。今檢《傳教大師將來目錄》（全集卷四）有兩錄，一為台州錄，一為越州錄。《曹溪大師傳》一卷乃在越州錄之中。越州錄中經卷皆貞元二十一年在越州所抄寫，更不會有“天台最澄”的題記。
然祖芳之跋似非有心作偽。按台州錄之末有題記，年月為大唐貞元貳拾壹年歲次乙酉貳月朔辛醜拾玖
大概祖芳一時記憶有誤，因“二月十九日”而誤寫二十一年為“十九年”，又誤記“天台”二字，遂使人生疑了。
我們可以相信此傳是最澄於貞元二十一年在越州抄寫帶回日本的本子。（適按：《宋僧傳》廿九，天台道邃傳記載最澄在天台的事，也說是貞元二十一年即順宗永貞元年。德宗崩在正月。是年八月始改永貞。）以下考證此傳的著作時代及其內容。
此傳作者不知是誰，然可以考定他是江東或浙中的一個和尚，其著作年代為唐建中二年（781），在慧能死後六十八年。傳中有雲：
大師在日，受戒開法度人三十六年。先天二年壬子歲滅度。至唐建中二年，計當七十一年。
先天二年至建中二年，隻有六十八年。但作者忽用建中二年為計算年數的本位，卻很可注意。日本忽滑穀快天先生（《禪學思想史》上382頁）說此句可以暗示《別傳》脫稿在此年。忽滑穀先生的話甚可信，我可以代他添一個證據。此傳說慧能臨死時，對門人說一則“懸記”（預言）：
