Passage One
A guide dog is a dog especially trained to guide a blind person. Dogs chosen for such training must show good intelligence, physical fitness, and responsibility. At the age of about fourteen months, a guide dog begins (11)(an intensive course that lasts from three to five months.) It becomes accustomed to the leather harness and stiff leather handle it will wear when guiding its blind owner. (12)(The dog learns to watch traffic and to cross streets safely. It also learns to obey any command that might lead its owner into danger.)(13) (The most important part of the training course is a four-week program) in which the guide dog and its future owner learn to work together. However, many blind people are unsuited by personality to walk dogs. Only about a tenth of the blind find a guide dog useful.

Can you imagine ice that does not melt and is not wet? Have your ever heard of dry ice? (14) (Dry ice is made by freezing gas.) It is quite different from ordinary ice which is simply frozen water.(17) (Dry ice was first manufactured in 1925.) It has since fulfilled the hopes of its inventor it can be used for making artificial fog in the movies.(15) (When steam is passed over dry ice, a very dense vapor rises.) It can also be used for destroying insects in grain supplies. It is more practical than ordinary ice because it takes up less space and it is 142 degrees colder.(16) (Since it turns into steam, instead of melting into water, it is cleaner to use. )For these reasons, it is extremely popular and many people prefer it to ordinary ice. Dry ice is so cold that if you touch it with your bare fingers, it will burn you.
